How much does a VPS cost per month in 2026?

Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: from $0 (free tiers) to about $8 per month for an entry-level VPS that is good enough for most projects. But the advertised price is rarely what you end up paying. Here are the real ranges and the costs few people include.

What makes the price go up

The hidden costs

1. Taxes and exchange rates

Depending on your country, VAT or sales tax is added at checkout. And if the provider bills in a different currency from your card's, the amount changes every month with the exchange rate, sometimes with a foreign transaction fee on top.

2. Renewal

The lowest prices usually require a 12- to 48-month contract and only apply to the first term. On renewal, the price can go up a lot. Before you sign up, look for the renewal price on the plan page.

3. Backups and snapshots

Many providers charge extra for automatic backups. It is money well spent, but it has to be part of the math.

4. Control panel

cPanel and Plesk have paid monthly licenses, sometimes more expensive than the VPS itself. Free alternatives such as CloudPanel, aaPanel or Coolify cover most cases.

5. Extras

Additional IPs, overage traffic, setup fees on short contracts and Windows licenses can show up on the bill. Read the pricing page all the way through.

Tip: to compare properly, work out the total cost over the period (including renewal, taxes and extras) and divide by the number of months. That's how you find out which plan is really cheaper.

Summary

A good starter VPS costs between $5 and $8 per month. Below that, you give up memory or stability; above it, you are paying for more resources. Before deciding, factor in taxes, renewal and backups.
